NAIROBI, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's total number of COVID-19 recoveries is nearing 10,000 mark as 603 patients were discharged from health facilities in the past 24 hours, the ministry of health said on Wednesday.
Mutahi Kagwe, cabinet secretary in the Ministry of Health, said that a total of 9,930 patients have so far recovered since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country on March 13.
Kagwe noted that out of the latest recoveries, 436 are from home-based care programs while 167 are from various hospitals in the country.
Kagwe observed that since the government introduced home-based care programs in the last three weeks, 5,656 have recovered from the program.
He attributed the high number of recovery cases to application of different interventions that included scientific contact tracing of exposed cases that was developed by health officials in a bid to help contain the spread of the disease.
According to Kagwe, some 671 people tested positive to COVID-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases to 23,873.
He said 633 of the latest cases are Kenyan nationals while 38 are foreigners.
Kagwe said that three patients succumbed to the respiratory disease during the period, bringing the total number of deaths to 391.
He observed that for Kenya to reduce the spread of the pandemic, the country's population must adhere to the containment measures.
