Proteas opener batsman Dean Elgar believes that South Africa was on top at end of day one of the first Test against Pakistan in Karachi.
The Proteas were bundled out for 220 on a flat and slow pitch with spinner Yasir Shah claiming three for 52.

Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada led a much-needed fightback as he claimed two wickets with the hosts on 33/4 at the close of play on Tuesday.
Elgar, who top-scored for his side with 58, acknowledged that the Proteas have upper hand at the moment.
"I think we are [on top] though after our first innings of batting I don't think I would've said that. We would have paid good money to have them four (wickets) down for such a low score," said Elgar.
"I do think South Africa had the better day even though it was a very low score in first innings for us. It could have gone either way with maybe 40 for nought and then we would've been in a bad position on day two."
Pakistan's experienced Azhar Ali (5*) is still at the crease with Fawad Alam (5*) as the hosts trail by 187 runs.
Elgar is hoping that the Proteas will wrap up the remaining six wickets as quickly as possible to extend their lead.
"Tomorrow we only need six wickets and we need to apply ourselves and hopefully learn from our mistakes, and try and get a sizeable lead on Pakistan," he said.
"Knowing that this pitch will get tougher, and knowing that we have good spinners, I am confident that we can get further ahead."
Rabada is one wicket away from claiming his 200th Test wicket from 44 Tests.
Play on Day 2 is scheduled to start at 7:00 SA time.
