Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Chad Wheeler was released from jail Tuesday on $400,000 bail, three days after he was arrested on suspicion of felony assault-domestic violence, according to King County Jail records.
Wheeler is accused of assaulting a woman in the Seattle suburb of Kent, according to The Seattle Times, which cited a report from the Kent Police Department.
The report said Wheeler threw the woman on the bed and strangled her until she lost consciousness. After the woman regained consciousness and fled to a bathroom to call 911, Wheeler picked the lock to the bathroom.
Police eventually arrived and broke into the house and found Wheeler in the bathroom with the woman.
The report says the incident began when Wheeler asked the woman to bow to him.
It said Wheeler had not been taking his medications for bipolar disorder.
"We are aware of the situation and still gathering information," the Seahawks said in a statement released Monday night.
Wheeler played in five games with Seattle this season. He joined the team in 2019. He is scheduled to become a restricted free agent.
Wheeler also has played for the New York Giants and started 19 of 27 games played over two seasons (2017-18). He was released in September of 2019.
Wheeler also was involved in an incident in December 2015 while he was in college at Southern California. According to reports, he was punching walls and windows in an apartment and police had to shoot him with multiple rounds of bean bag to subdue him. He was not arrested and was taken to a local hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
