TORONTO, Canada - A Bangladeshi-Canadian doctor assisted a Ugandan woman to deliver a baby on an overnight flight in December last year.
On Friday, Dr. Aisha Khatib, a professor at the University of Toronto, released a photo of herself and the baby.
The kid was delivered healthy at 35 weeks and was called Miracle Aisha after the doctor.
According to the BBC, Dr. Khatib was on a Qatar Airways aircraft from Doha to Entebbe when the call came through.
She was on the third leg of her journey after a long day at work in Toronto, but she didn't hesitate when a voice on the intercom inquired whether there was a doctor aboard.
"I saw a crowd of people gathered around the patient," Dr. Khatib told BBC. At first, she assumed it was a critical situation, like a heart attack.
"As I got closer, I saw this woman lying on the seat with her head toward the aisle and feet towards the window. And the baby was coming out!"
Two other passengers, an oncology nurse and a pediatrician from Doctors Without Borders assisted her.
"The nicest part of the story is that she named the child after me."
Dr. Aisha delivered the baby on December 5, but she has been too busy treating Covid-19 patients in Toronto to release the photos until this week.
