DAR ES SALAAM, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan said on Wednesday that her country's joint bid with Kenya and Uganda to host the 2027 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will play a major role in promoting tourism in the region.
"AFCON is watched by over one billion people in Africa and other parts of the world. The tournament is a platform for promoting tourism," said Hassan in a statement by the Directorate of Presidential Communications at the State House.
The statement said the AFCON 2027, to be attended by celebrities from the African continent and the globe, will also help to boost different sectors of the economy.
The head of state said the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Sports, in collaboration with the Tanzania Football Federation, was working hard to make preparations for hosting the AFCON 2027.
Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda have launched a joint bid for the AFCON 2027, which would bring the continental showpiece to East Africa for the first time in half a century.
