The Indian prime minister could attend this years event on May 9, which marks 80 years since the end of World War II
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi could attend this year's Victory Day parade in Moscow on May 9 - which marks the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in World War II - a source in India's military circles told TASS on Monday. The visit is "being planned," the source said, adding that "It is very likely to take place."
The report noted that discussions are underway regarding the participation of an Indian Armed Forces contingent in the parade.
"The issue of Indian military parade unit taking part in the Red Square parade is being worked out. They are expected to arrive a month in advance for rehearsals," the source told TASS.
Last week, India and Russiasigneda Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Agreement agreement, which eases coordination between their defense ministries for joint events, including the transportation of troops. The pact aims to enhance coordination in joint military exercises, disaster relief, and other joint operations.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said earlier this month that many countries invited for the May 9 celebrations have confirmed they will take part, including leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and other countries. "Russia welcomes all foreign guests who understand the significance of Victory Day," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin isexpected to visit Indialater this year for a summit with Modi. While the dates have not been finalized, both governments have confirmed that preparations are underway.
Modi visited Russia twice last year. In July, he held a bilateral summit with Putin, and later attended the BRICS summit in Kazan. During his visits, Modi acknowledged Russia's contributions to multilateralism, sustainable development, and global governance reforms. The leaders also discussed cooperation in politics, defense, energy, and cultural exchanges.
India has maintained strong relations with Russia despite Western pressure following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. New Delhi has not joined the Western sanctions against Moscow and has expanded economic cooperation, particularly in the energy sector. India has become one of Russia's largest oil buyers, with bilateral trade exceeding $65 billion in the 2023-24 financial year - a fivefold increase compared to 2021. Modi and Putin aim to boost trade to over $100 billion by 2030.
