New Delhi [India], April 17 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday reaffirmed India's commitment to building a 'positive and constructive relationship' with Bangladesh, highlighting the importance of a democratic and inclusive government in the neighbouring country.
Speaking at the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, 'India looks forward to having a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh. We stand for a democratic, inclusive Bangladesh.'
Jaiswal also spoke about trade issues and recent developments regarding transshipment facilities. 'As far as trade issues are concerned, last week, we made an announcement regarding the transhipment facility,' he said.
He clarified that stopping the transshipment facility for Bangladesh does not affect its trade with Nepal and Bhutan. 'We had taken that measure because of the congestion that we see on our Ports and our Airports. But I would also remind you, please do have a look at the developments that have happened on the Bangladeshi side prior to us announcing these measures,' he said.
'As far as your issue about regional integration and trade is concerned, our announcement regarding transshipment, it in no manner impacts Bangladesh's exports to Nepal and Bhutan. So, you know, we do have that in mind that regional trade needs to be promoted. So that is how I would look at India-Bangladesh ties. We have continued to call for constructive and positive engagement in our relationship,' Jaiswal added.
Last week, the MEA had announced the suspension of the transshipment facility that was earlier given to Bangladesh, citing logistical issues and heavy congestion at Indian ports and airports.
Jaiswal also said that India has taken note of the visit of Pakistan Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch to Bangladesh. She arrived in Dhaka on Wednesday to hold discussions on bilateral matters. (ANI)
