New Delhi [India], April 24 (ANI): Following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, opposition leaders have expressed their support for the central government in its efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.

BJD MP Sasmit Patra on Thursday said that the central government should take all necessary steps to ensure that the perpetrators of this gruesome attack are brought to justice.

'BJD represented its views in the All Party meeting...We urge the government to take all necessary steps to ensure that the perpetrators of this gruesome attack are brought to justice. Biju Janta reaffirms its full cooperation and support to the Government in all its efforts concerning the nation's national security...The overall consensus that has come out of this meeting is that all the political parties are together on this matter and we support the government fully in whatever actions it wants to take to bring the perpetrators to justice,' Patra said.

DMK MP Tiruchi Siva also condemned the terrorist attack, saying that such incidents should not happen in this country in future.

'Today, the government convened the all-party meeting, and it was presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh...On behalf of DMK, I expressed the concern which was made as a statement by CM MK Stalin on the floor of the assembly and in strong terms, we condemn what has happened in Pahalgam and such activities should not happen in this country in future,' Siva told ANI.

Siva added that DMK will support whatever concrete and constructive steps the government takes to put down terrorism in this country.

'So we should not just stop with expressing in words and condemning them. Some action has to be taken positively so that such incidents will not be repeated in future...Whatever the government is taking concrete and constructive steps to put down terrorism in this country, the DMK will support it,' Siva added.

Indian Union Muslim League's (IUML) Rajya Sabha MP Haris Beeran echoed similar sentiments, asserting the opposition's unified stance.

'In the all-party meeting, all the opposition parties and the parties' leaders present there strongly condemned this incident and reiterated that they will support the government in whatever decision the government takes. They also asked the government to give a befitting reply to the act of the terrorist and we will support in whatever decision the government takes...We are on the same page with the Prime Minister. We stand united as brothers and sisters of India and will ensure that nothing happens that will hamper the country's social fabric,' Beeran said.

Earlier today, the Central government convened an all-party meeting to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Minister and BJP National President JP Nadda, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Congress President and Rajya Sabha opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi, and other prominent leaders attended the meeting.

The terrorists attacked tourists at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam on Tuesday, killing 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen while leaving several others injured, in one of the deadliest attacks in the valley since the 2019 Pulwama strike in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed.

Following the attack, India has taken strong countermeasures against Pakistan for its support of cross-border terrorism.

In the Cabinet Committee on Security meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah, India decided to hold the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 in abeyance until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism and has closed the integrated Attari Check Post.

India has also declared the officials of the Pakistani High Commission persona non grata and ordered them to leave India within a week. The country further decided to cancel any visas provided under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) and ordered Pakistan to leave the country within 48 hours.

The Government of India has also decided to suspend visa services for Pakistani nationals, effective immediately. All existing valid visas issued by India to Pakistani nationals will stand revoked, effective from 27 April 2025, the Ministry of External Affairs stated in a press release. (ANI)
