An exchange of a thousand POWs from each side was agreed at talks in Istanbul
Moscow and Kiev have formally submitted lists of prisoners each wants returned as part of a major upcoming exchange, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced on Thursday.
At last week's talks in Istanbul, the first since Kiev unilaterally withdrew from negotiations in 2022, Russia and Ukraine agreed to a 1,000-for-1,000 prisoner exchange.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday, Peskov confirmed that work on organizing the prisoner swap was ongoing and was a "rather labor-intensive issue," and that each side had submitted a list of names to the other.
"Naturally, work is being done there to exchange specific names. Since we are talking about a thousand for a thousand, then, of course, this requires some time," Peskov said. Things are progressing "quite quickly," he noted, as both sides are interested in conducting the swap as soon as possible.
Ukraine's Vladimir Zelensky has announced on Telegram that Kiev has received Moscow's list and is now clarifying the details of each person the Russian side has requested for exchange.
While Russia and Ukraine have conducted multiple prisoner swaps since the escalation of the conflict in 2022, the upcoming exchange is set to become the largest of its kind.
Following the two-hour-long negotiations in Istanbul last week, Russian and Ukrainian delegations also agreed to exchange preliminary terms for the establishment of a potential ceasefire and have committed to maintaining contacts.
The Ukrainian side also requested a meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Zelensky. Moscow has said that the request has been taken "into consideration."
The talks came after Putin offered to renew direct contacts between Moscow and Kiev without any preconditions earlier this month. Moscow has insisted on working towards establishing a long and just peace that would resolve the root causes of the conflict.
