New Delhi [India], June 14 (ANI): Congress leader KC Venugopal on Saturday slammed the Union Government over India's stance of abstaining during voting at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) over the ceasefire in Gaza.
Venugopal said that India used to always stand for peace, justice, and human dignity, but now stands alone in South Asia, BRICS, and SCO on the issue despite a growing humanitarian crisis.
In a post on X, KC Venugopal wrote, 'India has always stood for peace, justice, and human dignity. But today, India stands alone as the only country in South Asia, BRICS, and SCO to abstain on a UNGA resolution demanding a ceasefire in Gaza. 60,000 killed. Most of them women and children. Thousands starving. International aid blocked. A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding.'

He further questioned has India abandoned its principled stand against war, against genocide, and for justice.
'Has India abandoned its principled stand against war, against genocide, and for justice? The MEA must explain: what changed in the last six months that led India from supporting a ceasefire to abstaining? We know this government has little regard for Nehru ji's legacy, but why abandon even Vajpayee ji's principled stance on Palestine?,' the post reads.
Venugopal said India should not remain silent during the ongoing crisis in Gaza, reminding the country that it has always supported peace, justice, and dialogue in global conflicts.
'India has long been a principled voice for ceasefire, peace, and dialogue in the Middle East. Rooted in our legacy of non-alignment and moral diplomacy, India has historically championed the cause of justice and humanitarian values in global conflicts. At a time when the region is witnessing unspeakable violence, humanitarian collapse, and growing instability, India cannot afford to remain silent or passive,' the post reads.
On Friday, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a permanent resolution demanding an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
A total of 149 countries voted in favour of a ceasefire in Gaza in the UNGA; meanwhile, 19 countries abstained and 12 nations voted against the resolution. (ANI)
